National Pain Week 2023

Coviu is proud to be supporting National Pain Week 2023!

National Pain Week 2023 is the annual awareness raising event co-ordinated by Chronic Pain Australia to draw attention to the plight of people suffering from chronic pain and, by doing so, reduce the social and other barriers related to living with chronic pain. This year, Coviu reflects on how virtual care can not only reduce barriers for chronic pain sufferers but create opportunities for better management of chronic pain.

Virtual Care Revolutionises Pain Management

National Pain Week serves as a powerful reminder of the millions of individuals around the world who endure the burden of chronic pain. The theme for 2023 is ‘painchanger’, a play on the term ‘gamechanger’, with the goal to ignite more conversations about pain management. In the digital age, advancements in healthcare technology have opened doors to innovative solutions, and one such avenue that has gained prominence is virtual care. Virtual care has revolutionised the way Australians approach pain management, offering new possibilities for accessible, convenient, and personalised care. In this blog, we will explore the intersection of virtual care and pain management, highlighting its benefits and how it empowers patients during National Pain Week and beyond.

Breaking Barriers to Access

One of the greatest challenges in pain management is ensuring access to care for all individuals, regardless of their geographic location or mobility limitations. Virtual care eliminates these barriers by enabling patients to receive high-quality care from the comfort of their homes. No longer are patients confined to long and arduous journeys or lengthy waits in waiting rooms. Virtual visits provide the opportunity for remote consultations with healthcare professionals, offering a lifeline to those who may otherwise struggle to access specialised pain management services.

Personalised Care Anywhere, Anytime

Pain management is a deeply personal journey, and virtual care embraces this concept by delivering personalised care that fits into patients' lives. Through telehealth platforms, patients can schedule appointments at their convenience, ensuring their pain management does not disrupt their daily routines. Whether it's a video consultation or a phone call, virtual care provides patients with direct access to healthcare professionals who specialise in pain management. The ability to communicate symptoms, concerns, and progress in real-time fosters a stronger patient-provider relationship, enhancing the effectiveness of pain management strategies.

Holistic Pain Management

Effective pain management requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach. Virtual care empowers patients by connecting them to a network of healthcare professionals specialising in different aspects of pain management. Patients can collaborate with pain physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists and other specialists, all within the virtual realm. This multidisciplinary collaboration ensures that patients receive well-rounded care, addressing physical, psychological, and emotional aspects of their pain. Virtual care platforms also facilitate seamless communication and coordination between specialists, resulting in more integrated and tailored treatment plans for patients.

Education and Self-Management

Educating patients about their pain condition and empowering them to self-manage is a crucial aspect of effective pain management. Virtual care offers an ideal avenue for providing educational resources, tools, and support to patients. Through telehealth platforms, healthcare professionals can share educational materials, guide patients through exercises, and provide self-care strategies. Patients can access a wealth of information and learn techniques to manage their pain more effectively, all with the convenience of virtual care.

Remote Patient Monitoring and Follow-Up

Pain management is an ongoing process, often requiring regular monitoring and follow-up appointments. Virtual care facilitates remote monitoring of patients, allowing healthcare professionals to assess progress, track symptoms, and adjust treatment plans accordingly. With the integration of remote monitoring devices, patients can share vital signs, activity levels, or sleep patterns with their healthcare providers. This real-time data enhances decision-making, enabling timely interventions to optimise pain management outcomes.

Personalised Care Anywhere, Anytime

As we observe National Pain Week, it's essential to recognise the transformative power of virtual care in pain management. This innovative approach breaks down barriers to access, offers personalised care, and empowers patients to take an active role in their pain management journey. By embracing virtual care, we can make significant strides in delivering effective, holistic, and patient-centered pain management services. Let us leverage the benefits of virtual care to transform the lives of those living with chronic pain, not only during National Pain Week but every day of the year.

More About National Pain Week

National Pain Week is Australia’s annual awareness event for chronic pain. National Pain Week takes place in the last week of July each year. National Pain Week 2023 will run from 24-30 July 2023.

In 2022, Chronic Pain Australia advocated to ensure that all Australians living with chronic pain receive Triple AAA standards of care – Awareness, Accessibility and Affordability. A key focus of activities for National Pain Week 2022 was to promote more awareness of the complex issues identified by our National Pain Survey 2022.

This year the week is all about building on 2022's theme by changing the game with the hashtag #painchanger.
